Lindsay Muir, Clay Sculptor
Clay Wildlife Sculpture
Born in Stanthorpe Queensland, Lindsay’s fondest memories of childhood are of exploring the natural environment of the beautiful high country which is the Granite Belt. The abundant flora and fauna of places like Girraween National Park are deeply etched in his mind.
After completing a Diploma of Visual Arts, Lindsay’s romantic notion of working on an island led to a time at Norfolk Island Pottery. A trip to the Sunshine Coast was to set up the next chapter in his life. He worked in potteries throughout the hinterland where the overwhelming influence of the rainforest started to emerge through Lindsay’s creations.
He developed techniques and a style totally unique and ideally suited to the lush, vibrant complexity of the rainforest.
Lindsay shares his knowledge and love of clay in workshops. Especially rewarding is the uninhibited enthusiasm shown by children when working with clay. He has been involved in projects such as making dioramas for National and Private Park displays. Collaboration with Maleny Author Jill Morris resulted in Lindsay creating sculptures used to illustrate the innovative children’s picture book “Green Air” produced by Greater Glider Productions.
A mixture of earthenware and stoneware clay is used to make Lindsay’s sculptures. The colours are achieved using underglazes then kiln fired to 1120?C. Post firing techniques including water droplets and clear finishes which are applied before framing.
Many clients come to Lindsay with a specific commission. It may be a request for particular flora or fauna or for a piece to adorn that special place in their home.
